we bought a lot!

We bought a lot!!! You heard it here first! Well kind of. I shared a blip of this on Instagram a few weeks ago, but now I'm making it official and I'm so excited! We closed on our lot this past week and I want to give you all the details. First off, let's start with a little back story on how we got here....

In case you didn't know my husband Jeff, is a realtor. So he is constantly researching homes and land not only for his clients but for us too. We moved into our current home (which is a zero lot) in summer of 2019. In case you're wondering what zero lot means - it's basically a house but you share a wall with someone. So it's two houses that are connected together. For some reason this type of build is very prominent in the area we live in. Previous to this we lived in an apartment and needless to say...when I came across this house I knew we couldn't pass it up! It's 3 levels, plenty of bedrooms (for now), 2.5 baths, and a walkout basement with a pretty good sized fenced in yard. AND we don't really have any neighbors behind us! Having these features in our first home was not something I thought we would find easily. Fun fact. My husband did not see this house in person when we put in our offer. He was in another state for work and saw it over FaceTime. Isn't that crazy?!? So sadly for him, he was not present for the purchase of our first home.

Okay - bringing it back. You know those planning for the future convos you have with your spouse? The ones where you're basically saying someday blah blah blah, but not sure when someday will come? We had lots of those conversations when it came to discussing where we wanted to live, what city we wanted to be in, and the type of home we wanted (new build or a fixer upper). We drove around a lot to see and familiarize ourselves with different neighborhoods and lots that were on the market. We did this enough that we felt very well versed on what our #1 picks were and what we could afford. Glad we did...because little did we know how soon that someday conversation would be a reality much sooner....

In efforts to not make this post too long....Jeff randomly became privy to some knowledge about a lot that was for sale in North Liberty in a somewhat (shocking to us) price range. Because North Liberty is our #1 pick for many reasons we went to go see it right away! We didn't realize at first it would be about a 30 second car ride from where we live now. From that moment we knew this was something we couldn't pass up! So here we are now....owners of this lot that is full of potential! Seriously - my mind can't stop dreaming up every inch of this place! Here's the thing, we are not building right now. It's a combo of not being in a rush, but we also want to start as soon as it makes sense! We want to make sure we do this the right way with as little regrets at possible. So we will be researching and dreaming up our ideas for a little while....our goal is to hopefully build and move in 2022!

As of right now, we have decided the house plan we want (which I don't forsee changing at all), but who knows! We really love 3 story homes and we fell in love with the layout! In the photo above you can see my very professional alterations of the style of home we want (colored in with white siding and black roof + trim). I'm just going to say it now, I have zero knowledge on construction/home building terms/lingo...so I apologize for that in advance. But this will definitely be a big learning curve and I honestly can't wait! Other photos you see above are inspiration picks....I have so many of those....

Here is a short wish list:

- white home with black roof and windows

- large white kitchen with backsplash, large island, open shelving and a combo of black and brass accents

- floor to ceiling white fireplace

- soaking tub

- mud room

- lots and lots of storage space

- an actual laundry ROOM (right now we have a laundry closet)

- overall a comfy + welcoming home to entertain all our friends and family! <3

I’m sure you’re thinking this sounds like a lot of white. Here’s the thing. I want a classic base. I want Father of the Bride house vibes until the the end of time! And you know me...I’m constantly changing up my home decor and thats where my color lives. So don’t worry. There will be color! And I do have some colorful plans up my sleeves that I’ll share when the time comes!

This is really a dream. One of the biggest creative projects I'll take on at this point in my life. All my creative juices are flowing and I have so many ideas. Hopefully they all fit within my budget (I'm sure they wont lol)...my husband actually laughs every time I tell him or demand that we will have xyz in our new home. I know I'll definitely have to rein it in...but for now it's fun to dream, right!?! Either way, it will be wonderful and part of the fun is the journey itself.

So that's it...the big life update! I truly can't wait to take you all on this journey with us. Once we start building I plan to do house updates on the blog. But for short term updates and decisions please follow along on my Instagram account The Darling Road!
